Transportation staff standing in front of electric school bus

Happy Earth Day! If your student rides Route 11, you may have noticed this month that we have a new Bluebird electric school bus. Lakewood ordered three new electric school buses, and related charging infrastructure, with a $1.6 million grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. The first bus was delivered in March and the second was delivered in April, bringing our total number of electric buses to five.

These buses will replace our aging diesel buses. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, electric buses save money since we don’t have to purchase fuel. Another bonus – since the bus is so quiet, students naturally talk at a lower volume.

Seven students hold a Burmese python

We love Lucy! This little alligator captured the hearts of our Cougar Creek Elementary students (and staff!) by falling asleep on demand and relaxing calmly in Reptile Man Scott Petersen’s arms.

Reptiles, such as alligators and snakes, are an important part our connected ecosystem. In Washington and around the world, snakes eat the rodents that would otherwise eat seeds and grains that people rely on for food. While some snakes are venomous, they are also afraid of people and won’t bite unless they feel they are in danger.

Mediterranean salad

Students at Cougar Cabinet are helping to bring more plant-based foods to their cafeteria. As part of a grant, Lakewood Nutrition Services introduced three plant-based dishes at the March meeting and asked students for feedback. On the menu: a bean burrito, curry quinoa/rice and a Mediterranean chickpea salad.

Some students loved the flavors, while others shared constructive criticism. Staff will use the feedback to refine recipes and bring plant-based options to a school cafeteria near you soon. Hear more from our student facilitators: https://youtu.be/45uvh1iTqEk
